The first prototype SB2C. The type had a very troubled development phase and it was said that SB2C stood for 'Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class'. This prototype crashed on 18 February 1941, less than two months after its first flight. The photo must have been taken between October 1941, when it had been rebuilt with a longer nose and an enlarged tailfin, and 21 December when it crashed again. Eventually 7000 examples were built but they were never liked and the problems contributed to the demise of Curtiss. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

It looks rather crude but the Blériot 110, designed by Italian engineer Filippo Zappata, broke several world records including a point-to point distance of 9105 km (5657 miles) flown from New York to Lebanon in August 1933. It had a span of 26.50 m (86 ft 11 in) and could carry 6000 litres of fuel near the centre of gravity forward of the two crew. The sole example was named Joseph Le Brix after the recently deceased long-range aviator in January 1932. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

BuNo 1813 in flight near New York - NRAB New York was Floyd Bennett Field. This was one of 50 SBC-4s urgently sold to France in June 1940. 44 of the Helldivers were loaded on the French aircraft carrier Bearn in Halifax, having been pulled across the Canadian border at Haulton, Maine to comply with the US Neutrality Act. Upon the fall of France, Béarn put in at Martinique where the aircraft were left to rot by the Vichy administration. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Ship 1, the first Bell helicopter, underwent several visual changes. By the summer of 1943, a wheeled undercarriage was installed, the fuselage was covered and it was painted blue overall. When rebuilt as Ship 1A in 1944 it was yellow. Photo from: Wright State University

The huge XB-15 bomber, designed in 1934 but not flown until 1937, after the smaller B-17. Underpowered and slow, the sole XB-15 served as a transport aircraft during WWII, designated XC-105. This photo was taken near New York: top left is Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, on the right is the Gerritsen Beach neighbourhood and the Gerritsen Inlet Bridge below the tail leads to Floyd Bennett Field. At first known as the Consolidated 39, the Convair 104 combined a new fuselage with the wings and tail surfaces of the PB4Y-2 Privateer. First flown in April 1944, it was intended for airline and military use. The US Navy cancelled a letter of intent for 253 R2Y aircraft due to 'design deficiencies' but the second of the two airframes built, NX3939, was flown as BuNo 09803 for a while. Both 'scrapped circa 1945'. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Floyd Carlson hovering the second Bell 30 inside an armoury in Buffalo. Since Hanna Reitsch had flown an Fw 61 in the Deutschlandhalle, this was merely the 'first indoor flight of a helicopter in the western hemisphere'. The building seems to be the Masten Avenue Armory. The RAF ordered 676 Airacobras in April 1940 but performance was far below expectations. No 601 Sqn flew one operational mission, on 9 October 1941, before most of these aircraft were diverted to the Soviet Union. AH621 however went to the RCAF. It crashed on 26 November 1941 near RCAF Rockcliffe, only two weeks after the reported date this photo was taken near the Bell factory in Niagara Falls. The first factory-owned Freighter was quickly sent on a tour through North America - Bristol must have thought this concept might catch on in these rich lands. We're told the car is an Austin - with left-hand steering. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution
