Also taken this day at Proserpine was Ansett's then new Convair 440 VH-BZF. The crowds may have turned out to see the new plane. Ansett owned the nearby Hayman Island resort. For a many years it received an Ansett flying boat service from Sydney via Brisbane. When landplanes took over, Proserpine became the transit airport holiday makers.

Ex I-TROS, arrived in Australia with New Holland Airways and carrying migrants. Sold to Butler which disposed of it in 1956. Went to the US where it became N55L. In Italy it had been fitted with an air stair, which appears to have been the rectangular forward half of the standard double C-47 door hinged at the bottom. It was markedly larger than the rounded airstair doors Butler had in its other former C-47s.

The burnt-out airframe of VH-BHF, the result of radio fault on September 17, 1952. Photo is believed to be in the 1950s. In a 1960s photo of the aircraft the wings have been removed as has the aluminum sheet on the undercarriage legs. It was reported as still at Mainoru in the 1980s.

VH-INX soon after arrival from Melbourne-Essendon. It had been trucked to Melton to be converted to an airport cafe. Sometime in 1972 the undercarriage retracted and it lay on its belly with the Ansett-ANA markings blacked out. Back on its undercarriage the tail was painted white but from then on it was all downhill. Parts went missing including the cargo doors and the rudder and the paint flaked off. INX eventually fell back on its tail and remained that way until scrapped in the early 1990s.

Photos of A85-441 are rare. It was written off in a midair collision at Point Cook on June 6, 1964. While both pilots survived, Bill Robertson flying -441 was critically injured. He did resume his RAAF career three years later, rising to the rank of wing commander and commanding No.5 Squadron. Awarded the DFC in Vietnam where he flew UH-1 Iroquois. Photo by Errol Walker.

With its elevators removed, this photo appears to show the aircraft after it was withdrawn from use in May 1965. The Pan Am DC-7C in the background shows international airline flights were still using Whenuapai. They were moved to the new international airport (NZAA) in November 1965 allowing the DC-7Cs to be replaced by 707s. The other aircraft in the background in an RNZAF DC-6. NZ5802 was flown to Ohakea in February 1966 and scrapped.

Qantas retained two immaculate DC-4s for services to Norfolk Island. It was in theory an international destination and Qantas protected its international monopoly vigorously. But for an airline with ambitions to become all 747 they were an expensive luxury. Runway restricts on the island stopped jets and limits on overwater operations prevented twin props. The dilemma was resolved when an exemption was given to allow F27s with long-range tanks to replace the DC-4s. Longer, stronger runways later opened the airport to 737 and A320 aircraft.

Butler Air Transport publicity photo. Arthur Butler made his tiny home town of Tooraweenah a hub for his airline. Traffic from towns in NSW and southern Queensland fed into the airport for DC-3 services to Sydney. Tooraweenah vanished from the world's airline maps with Butler but was for a while a base for gliding over the Warrumbungle mountains seen in the background of the photo.
