Based on the wartime G.55 fighter, the G.59 used the Merlin engine. Produced in A (single-seat) and B (two-seat advanced trainer) versions, the type entered service in 1950. The later -4 versions featured a cut-down rear fuselage and bubble canopy. Exports to Argentina and Syria were achieved. This survivor was first exhibited in Turin before moving to the Italian AF Museum and had been modified in service from -2B to -4B standard.

Previously displayed nearby on the other side of this hardstanding, under the seaplane crane on the shore of Lake Bracciano. The AMI received a dozen HU-16s to fulfil its SAR obligations under ICAO from the late 1950s, replacing the indigenous Cant Z.506 seaplanes and serving in ever reducing numbers until 1978 when replaced by HH-3F helicopters. The HU-16 latterly became quite problematic and spent extended periods under overhaul, while some were restricted to calm water or land-only operations.

The first Atlantic for Italy was handed over in 1972, the new type allowing the withdrawal of their S-2 Trackers and bringing the advantage of a 20-hour endurance. This example had been active until its retirement last November with 41º Stormo Antisom (41st Antisubmarine Warfare Wing) at Sigonella, Sicily. Earmarked for preservation, in October 2018 it was airlifted from Pratica di Mare to its current position by an Erickson S.64 Skycrane helicopter of the Vigili del Fuoco (fire service), as there is no runway at Vigna di Valle.

The Museum re-opened after reorganisation the day before this shot of their C-47, which had been inside when I first visited in 2019. The dayglo has faded quite badly. Originally taken on strength by the USAAF as 42-100731 in 1943, it joined KLM as PH-TBH in 1946 and moved on to the AMI in 1950, ending its service with 14° Stormo in the early nineties.

Under MDAP Italy had received the PV-2 Harpoon for the anti-submarine role, but sought more modern equipment in the form of P-2 Neptunes. Instead, the US offered Trackers which would have the advantage of commonality with USN S2F-1s already operating with the 6th Fleet. Delivered from 1957, this example was one of the original six assigned to Napoli. They were always land-based and were progressively withdrawn through the 1970s as the Breguet Atlantic was introduced. The former USN Bu Aer number was adopted as the MM serial. The last Italian Tracker was grounded in August 1978.

Issued to the AMI in large numbers under the MDAP, the Havard brought the post-war Italian training capability into line with other NATO nations, remaining in use well into the 1970s. Following withdrawal, many found their way to Guidonia for disposal, which is where this example was based anyway, the coding denoting Regione Roma.

The G.212 was an enlarged development of Fiat's G.12 but not flying until 1947, only 19 were built, 11 for the Italian AF and eight for airlines in Italy, Egypt and France. Two of the AMI's aircraft, including the museum's example, were converted as G.212 AV (Aula Volante) flying classrooms. The codes are those of 142a Squadriglia Centro Soccorso.

15° Stormo is the AMI's dedicated SAR unit and has over recent decades contributed to international humanitarian relief operations in Albania, Iraq and Kosovo and Somalia among others.
