This A-7 was flown on 18th Nov. 1972 by Maj. Colin A. Clarke on a nine-hour rescue support mission in SE Asia for which he received the Air Force Cross. This aircraft arrived at the National Museum of the USAF for display in 1992. The Skywarrior in the background is one of the few regrets about my visit to NMUSAF as I just couldn't get a shot of it that I was happy with.

This George is on display at the National Museum of the USAF and is one of only three extant restored examples. It is a fighter-bomber variant equipped with wing mounts to carry bombs and is painted as an aircraft in the Yokosuka Kokutai, an evaluation and test unit similar in function to the USAAF's Flight Test Unit at Wright Field.

With a short take-off capability and a powerful rate of climb the CF-100 was ideal as an interceptor and so formed an integral part of the US-Canadian North American Air Defense (NORAD) system. This Canuck is painted to appear as a 428 Squadron Mk.4A from the mid-1950s and is now on display at the National Museum of the USAF.

The B-50 was the last propeller driven bomber to be delivered to the USAF and although superficailly similar to the B-29 the large numer of modifications caused the redesignation. After being replaced by B-47s in front-line service many B-50s were stripped of defensive arnament and converted by the addition of Doppler & weather radar, atmospheric samplers and bomb-bay fuel tanks to weather recon aircraft. This was the last WB-50 to be retired in 1965 and arrived at the National Museum of the USAF in 1968.

I find it really fascinating to see these old helicopters/aeroplanes and to understand how the types in service today have evolved from them. The boom in helicopter development is particularly interesting as the rapid advances post-WWII quickly opened up possibilities that couldn't be contemplated previously. The improved capabilities of the H-5 became extremely useful during the Korean War for the timely rescue of downed pilots and for Medevac missions.

The C-60 was the most numerous of the Lodestar variants operated by the USAF. This example was TOC by the USAAF in 1943 but went to the French post-war and served in Algiers as F-BAMA. It returned to the US around the mid-fifties and flew with various private owners (last reg. as XA-SEX) before arriving at the National Museum of the USAF for preservation and display.

The USAAC needed an aircraft capable of flying very slowly for observation and control of the battlefield and the autogyro seemed to the ideal solution. However, it was soon discovered that these aircraft lacked the performance necessary for military applications and due to the inability to hover they were soon superseded by the helicopter. This example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF.

When the US entered WWII, the USAAF contracted with Interstate for 250 S-1B aircraft, designating the prototype as the XO-63. It was the last aeroplane to use the 'O' (for observation) designation, later the production planes were re-designated L-6s. However, the aircraft had significant overheating problems that were only partially solved and had the dubious distinction that fewer L-6s were built than any other USAAF liaison/utility aircraft. This example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF.

This Me-262A is on display in the WWII Gallery at the National Museum of the USAF. It was brought to the US from Germany in July 1945 for flight evaluation. Subsequently restored by the 96th Mobile Maintenance Squadron, Kelly Air Force Base, TX in 1976-1979. It is painted without operational unit markings to represent an aircraft that has just left the production line.

This is the paint scheme she wore whilst serving in the 357th TFS, 355th TFW based at Takhli Royal Thai Air Base in Thailand.
