A special mission for Franeker. Thai Prince Paribatra was exiled to the Netherlands East Indies following a coup in Thailand in 1932. He died in 1944 in Bandung, then under Japanese occupation. His remains were flown back to Thailand by the KLM plane. Franeker crashed in India on 12 July 1949. Among the 45 dead were 15 American journalists who had just made a trip through the Indonesian islands, paid for by the Dutch government to convince them of the justness of Dutch colonial policy. This was the prototype of the L-649, the first true airliner model of the Connie, first flown as NX101A on 18 October 1946. It entered service with Eastern Air Lines as NC101A in October 1947 - not the first example to be delivered. Eastern was the only airline to operate the L-649 as it was quickly superseded by the L-749. Photo by: Ralph Morse / Life

The early Constellations were often volume-restricted rather than weight-restricted. The Speedpak cargo pannier was developed at the request of Eastern Air Lines. It reduced speed by 10 mph and range by 4%. It was electrically lowered for unloading or for removal as it was typically used on shorter flights - note that the unit wears an individual number, 14, and does not belong to the airframe. Eastern actually ordered 14 Speedpaks initially and KLM seven. Photo by: Ralph Morse / Life

MATS was originally a joint US Air Force and Navy affair. In December 1956 the USAF was put in control and in 1958, the US Navy had to transfer 32 of its 50 R7V Constellations to the USAF. Perhaps the struggle for these aircraft began earlier since they were allocated 1954 serials, in this case 54-4051. Photo from: US Navy - National Naval Aviation Museum

Ex USAF aircraft that was disposed of in 1981. Used for transporting fresh fish initially in Alaska and later the Philippines as N4247K. Impounded at Manila in 1988. A 1988 attempt to buy the aircraft was unsuccessful due to legal problems. Finally in 2014 it came up for auction and the museum was able to acquire it. Its condition meant it had to be dismantled and was shipped to Australia in 2017. Painted as L.1049H VH-EAM msn 4810 which was cancelled in 1962
