The XF-85 was intended to give fighter protection to 'parent' B-36s by carrying the 'parasite' within the bomb bay, lowering and releasing it from a trapeze as required. Testing with a modified B-29 began in 1948 but about half of the Goblin flights ended with emergency ground landings after the test pilot could not re-hook to the B-29. The program ended when aerial refueling of conventional fighter aircraft showed greater promise.

This early Lancer meets visitors to the wonderful Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum near Ashland. It was the last B-1A built as used primarily as avionics test bed for B-1B program. The plane now looks like it is undergoing restoration as some of the normal paint has been removed to show the primer, resulting in this pseudo-camouflage effect.

This Vulcan was delivered to the RAF in March 1963 and, after retirement, ferried to the Strategic Air Command Museum at Offut AFB in Omaha in June 1982. In 1997, XM573 was moved thirty miles down the road to be ready for the opening of the brand new Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum at Ashland. It is currently in storage behind the museum, out of display.
