Location is likely Croydon rather than a military airfield, and the alleged date, 12 October 1932, is problematic because Prince Edward left for Copenhagen on Imperial Airways on 21 September and returned from his trip by night boat from Holland on 15 October. While in Sweden, by the way, he and his brother George flew on another Ju 52, SE-ADR Södermanland, then already in service with AB Aerotransport. In January 1938 it was renamed Lübeck by DLH. 17 He 116s appear to have been built, including two for Japan and twelve He 116A (not He 116B) reconnaissance aircraft for the Luftwaffe, which were used for cartographic flights over friendly territory.

Shortly after taking off from Croydon en route to Berlin via Amsterdam on 6 Nov.1929, it encountered thick fog and turned back to Croydon, the Captain descending to maintain visual contact with the ground. It flew into tree tops on a hill in Marden Park, near Godstone, Surrey, crashed and caught fire. Of the occupants, six were killed and three injured, one of whom died of his injuries later that day. Only the co-pilot and one passenger survived.

In 1937, it successfully completed a route probing flight to China and back, despite a forced landing after engine failure and the crew being caught in war actions in China. On 2 December 1938, enroute from Berlin to Damascus, it crashed in bad weather close to Wien-Aspern while diverting after a missed approach. The crew was badly hurt, the passengers hardly and all but the aircraft survived.
