Most probably Tempelhof in 1936. ALIX was the second He 111 to fly, before the V2, D-ALES. It was originally designated as a He 111c (lower case). In March 1937 this aircraft crashed in Bathurst, Gambia, arriving with mail for South America which was to be transferred to a Dornier Wal. The Ju 52 D-ASIH crashed in the French Alps on 3 December 1936. Behind that is Hitler's personal Ju 52, D-2600. Until April 1936 this was c/n 4021. It was replaced by c/n 4053, also D-2600. It's cool to find out the location of an old photo. A reverse image search for the church tower gave poor results, but the roof of the building gives the last four letters of the city name. Saarbrücken's first airport was situated in a bend of the River Saar near the church of St Arnual. Wikipedia notes that DLH maintained unprofitable services to the capital of the disputed Saarland for political reasons, and that small planes were therefore used like the He 70G Blitz Buntspecht (spotted woodpecker).

Delivered to Lufthansa as D-AZAW in 1941. To Iberia as EC-CAN in 1942. Transferred to Lufwaffe as CJ+KA. Returned to Spain as T2B-108. Donated to Munich Museum in 1965. Exhibited at the Internationale Verkehrsausstellung 1965. In 1966 it went on display at the Verkehrsmuseum Berlin with the same spurious prewar registration, representing Lufthansa's first Junkers 52. Today it is part of the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin collection as D-AZAW.

There are apparent inconsistencies in this information. The information on the slide states, 'D.L.H.'s Fokker FIII Freight Plane at Croydon, August 1925', but D.L.H. was not founded until -6 January 1926. It was registered to the joint Russian-German airline, DeruLuft in June 1926 and for a while carried the Russian registration RR-6 before being restored to German marks D-906 (so was June 1926 the date of initial registration or the date restored as D-906?). DeruLuft operated mainly between Germany and Russia, although D.L.H. took a stake in DeruLuft in 1926. Sold abroad Dec.1928.

One of three Fw 200s ordered in early 1939 by Dai Nippon Kabushiki Kaisha (Japan - Manchuria Aviation Company). Not delivered and used 'briefly' by Lufthansa, then to KG 40 of the Luftwaffe. Destroyed by the RAF at Bordeaux - Mérignac on 13 April 1941, so the 1940 dating of this photo is probably accurate. Photo from: Fortepan

'The Prince of Wales at an English military airfield.' French press photo showing the second Ju 52 in Lufthansa service, delivered on 10 September 1932. Location is likely Croydon rather than a military airfield, and the alleged date, 12 October 1932, is impossible because Prince Edward left for Copenhagen on Imperial Airways on 21 September and returned from his trip by night boat from Holland on 15 October. While in Sweden, by the way, he and his brother George flew on another Ju 52, SE-ADR Södermanland, then already in service with AB Aerotransport. A sharper photo of the Ju 86 civil prototype. The aircraft was at first named Dresden and renamed Brocken by Lufthansa. Photo from Swedish source but likely taken at Dessau, given the Junkers aircraft in the background and the picture's appearance in a German magazine in June 1936. What are the single-engined planes on the right - W33s? Photo from: Tekniska museet

The He 116 was designed as a long-range mailplane. This is the first prototype, first flown on 9 December 1936. Here it wears a Lufthansa paint scheme, but no titles. In January 1938 it was renamed Lübeck by DLH. 17 He 116s appear to have been built, including two for Japan and twelve He 116A (not He 116B) reconnaissance aircraft for the Luftwaffe, which were used for cartographic flights over friendly territory.

Built at Limhamn, Sweden, Oct.1925 and operated initially by Flygindustri as S-503. To DLH as D-903 Jan.1926. Shortly after taking off from Croydon en route to Berlin via Amsterdam on 6 Nov.1929, it encountered thick fog and turned back to Croydon, the Captain descending to maintain visual contact with the ground. It flew into tree tops on a hill in Marden Park, near Godstone, Surrey, crashed and caught fire. Of the occupants, six were killed and three injured, one of whom died of his injuries later that day. Only the co-pilot and one passenger survived.
